Pet taming explained

Quick answer

Taming is a lasso mini-game, not a dice roll or a health threshold: clear the area first, then throw. Pets level by fighting, bring their own elemental ability, and the bigger ones become mounts. Catch rates and the creature list are not published.

Taming is the game, not a side system

Tame any animal, level it, ride it, fight beside it. That is the pitch, and it is worth taking literally: in the builds players have been testing, the lasso is available early and works on creatures across the world rather than on a curated list of "pets".

The mechanic itself is a mini-game, not a dice roll and not a health threshold. You aim, you throw, and you play out the taming interaction — which is why the same creature can fail twice and succeed on the third try. Alpha feedback called the lasso satisfying once the timing clicked; the June 2026 update specifically overhauled pet taming and the feedback loop around it.

What a tamed creature gives you

WhatWhat it does
LevelsPets level up like a party member rather than sitting at a fixed strength.
Elemental abilitiesEach pet brings its own elemental ability into a fight. This is the part that changes what your build can do, not just how much damage it does.
RidingLarger creatures are mounts. Riding is a movement system, and it is how you cross biomes quickly.
Companionship in combatYour pet fights alongside you while you use your own weapons and abilities — see the combat page.

How to tame reliably

The developer has never published the exact numbers behind the mini-game, so anything claiming a precise catch rate is inventing it. What is documented is the approach:

  1. Clear the area first. Being interrupted mid-taming is a wasted attempt, so deal with aggressive wildlife before you throw.
  2. Tame the element you need, not the biggest thing you can see. A companion whose ability counters the biome you are working through outperforms a stronger pet of the wrong element.
  3. Level a pet by using it. Pets that stay in your stable do not grow; the ones that fight do.
  4. Expect to travel for the good ones. With endless procedural biomes, the creature you want is often not in the first three regions you cross.

Riding: what it changes

  • Riding is a movement upgrade, not a combat stance. Mounts get you across procedurally generated distance that would otherwise eat a session.
  • Because biomes are endless, mount speed effectively determines how much of the world you can actually see per session.
  • Riding does not remove the need for the pet systems underneath it — a mount that has been levelled and given an elemental ability is a different tool from a fast one.

What is still unconfirmed

Being straight about the gaps, as of 2 October 2026:

  • The full creature list has not been published. The store page promises "any creature", and community footage shows a broad range, but no official roster exists to check against.
  • Taming difficulty curves by species are not documented — no published table of catch chance or required items.
  • Level caps and stat growth per pet are not published either.
  • Whether every creature is rideable is unclear. The store page says "tame any animal"; official footage shows mounts of various sizes, but the smallest creatures are shown as companions rather than mounts.

Where the game shows you a number in the UI, trust the UI; where it does not, this site leaves the field empty rather than guessing.
